My ‘River of Shit’ exercise to get through a rough day (1 min read)

We all have bad days – that’s a given. It’s how we handle them that determines the impact. We can drown screaming for our lives in a river of shit or we could try something else. Here’s what I do at times…

I visualise all the crap that’s happening that day as a furiously flowing river of shit. You could try diving in and swim against the flow and get swept away while swallowing mouthfuls of it. That kind of sucks.

And so, I picture a nice bridge arching over the whole river. I stand at the centre of it, prop my elbows up on the ledge and lean over. I stand there smiling, almost ready to laugh. Just watching it all flow past me – totally untouched by the stinking mess below.

And that’s it. When I’m ready, I can visualise myself walking off the bridge, hands in pockets, whistling a happy tune. That shit ain’t mine.
