Friday Virtue #11: Suffer no more…(than necessary)

“A man who suffers before it is necessary, suffers more than is necessary” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

I’d like to add ‘after it is necessary’ to this one also.

How much time I’ve bloody wasted inflicting suffering upon myself – wheter it be replaying memories or being afraid of the future – is daylight robbery of the present moment.

I wish someone like Seneca could appear out of nowhere and smack me in the face sometimes while reciting quotes like the one above. I’ve needed that kind of intervention this week.

I decided to be super productive on Monday. Finally getting round to fixing a broken laptop that was collecting dust under the bed for a while. I eventually fixed it with the help of tech wizards on Youtube. I then dove deep into my recent past via old photos, tons of them, which I hadn’t seen in a while. Bad idea. There I was living in the past for hours, almost reaching out to it, forgetting that it was no more and it wasn’t coming back. I had a nice little downward spiral for the rest of the week, despising the future.

Anyway, today is Friday (in my timezone). Don’t live in the past people. And don’t invite future suffering before it’s time. Just do whatever it is you need to do right now.

One of these days will be your last, you’ll run out of time, and there will be no such thing as tomorrow. Tomorrow you’ll be gone.

Happy Friday all. Have a nice weekend.
